This is the home page of Sustainable Initiatives. Si is a network of individuals that seeks to serve the development community.

The core value of the network is that Creative Thinking is a key element to Development work at any level. Whether it be villages in Cambodia or communities in Reading UK, it is vital that critical thinking be supplemented with creative thinking. When one reads the literature on Development in the Third World (or South, or Two Thirds world, whatever term you care to use) one notes an emphasis on problem identification. The development community has grown very aware that community participation in problem identification is a prerequisite to a successful project - it leads to ownership and long term involvement. But little is written or mentioned about the processes of finding solutions. There is either an expectation that the community themselves will come up with answers, or a reliance on the intervention agency to supply specialists that will find answers. The process of creativity is a neglected subject.

Si attempts to stand in that gap and to encourage all NGOs, Bilateral and Multilateral donors to consider how to facilitate an increase in a communities collective creative skills.

The linked pages are intended to inform about sustainable development. They are a compliation of case studies and commentary on development and the principles of change.

This page is generally under some form of reconstruction so please bear with us if not all the links work.

The Si pages are to share experiences. They are intended for people who are:- professionals working in community development, field workers in the Third World who want practical ideas, and any interested parties trying to make a difference
